Speed has been a ranking factor long enough that people have stopped paying attention to it. That is exactly why it is still an advantage.
The metrics that matter
- LCP — Largest Contentful Paint. Under 2.5s.
- INP — Interaction to Next Paint. Under 200ms.
- CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift. Under 0.1.
What actually moves them
Most sites do not have a mysterious performance problem. They have images that were never resized, a font loading strategy nobody chose deliberately, and four analytics scripts competing for the main thread.
- Serve images at the size they render, in a modern format.
- Reserve space for anything that loads late — that is your CLS.
- Defer third-party scripts. They are usually the INP problem.
- Measure field data, not lab data. Real users on real phones.
Why it compounds
Speed is not only a ranking input. It is the difference between a visitor reading your first paragraph and never seeing it.
